Livelihood Initiatives |
|
Subhalaxmi extends support to the promising micro-entrepreneurs who are willing to invest in both farm and nonfarm based enterprises. Through the extension of credit support, business plan preparation and market linkages the cooperative is promoting the livelihoods of its members. Through credit services, capacity building and market linkages individual enterprises are being supported by the cooperative. Subhalaxmi also extended credit support to the potential micro-entrepreneurs irrespective of any trades. As on 30th September 2016, 2392 households are engaged in different enterprises. Out of them 269 households (11%) are involved in Animal Husbandry activities like poultry, Goatary, Dairy, Pisciculture and piggery. 1230 households (51%) engaged in different agricultural and horticulture activities which includes paddy, vegetables, floriculture, mushroom etc.20% (472) of house hold engaged in different trading vending and business activities such as grocery shop, veg vending, fast food, rice trading etc. Very less 5% (106 nos) of households are engaged in service sector activities like tailoring, beauty parlour, cycle repairing, mobile repairing and downloading, hotel etc and rest 288 ( 12 % )are involved in petty business and other activities.

Production and Marketing of Phenyl (In the brand name of PHENOCLEAN)
Phenyl business of the cooperative has gained recognition among the consumer of Jharsuguda and its outside districts. The business is flourishing as a profitable venture for the cooperative. A number of institutional and private vendors got attracted towards the quality maintained in the product of cooperative and placing their order on a regular basis.
Diversification of products to different colours, advertisement through flex banner, approach letter to hospitals, hotels and education institutions are some of the marketing strategies the team adopted during this quarter. Not even Jharsuguda but also outside Jharsuguda such as Bhawanipatna, Bhubaneswar, Sundergarh, the team explored for its marketing and getting fair response.
Members of Atmaja SHG of village Siriapali are now capable enough in its technicality and producing the Phenyl of good quality.
On an average the cooperative is marketing Phenyle of 1500 ltrs per months.

Agarbatti Rolling ( In the brand name of UPASANA)
Commercial production of Agarbatti Rolling at Katikela has initiated by Subhalaxmi followed to the training program conducted under the technical guidance of KVIC. Subhalaxmi is now entering into the market with this new product in the brand name of "UPASANA". Standard packaging in its own brand has already been ensured by the project team and commercial production with almost 25 cooperative members started. |

Training programme on Tailoring
Subhalaxmi realized the fact that rural youth can contribute to the household economy substantially if their skills and expertise can be enhanced with updated technology. With this objective, it planned to train 15-20 young girls from rural areas on tailoring. The objective of this training programme was to build the skills of rural youth on methods and techniques of Tailoring and to provide them an alternative source of livelihood. Subhalaxmi is driving Tailoring Training Units in peripheral villages .The units are well-equipped with basic training amenities and being managed by an expert trainer. Batch size of 20 participants. |

Training program on Hand made paper items
Keeping in view the growing ecological awareness among people to avoid plastic and the emerging prospects of paper bag, Subhalaxmi cooperative realized to conduct a training programme for rural women on paper made items.
Thus, a weeklong training program was organized by Subhalaxmi at Siriapali village where 25 SHG members were being trained. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) was the technical partner of the training program. Participants were trained on paper bags, envelop, registers, note pad, folder and paper bowl by the expert trainer deputed by KVIC.
In the training program participants were also oriented on the growing consciousness among people about usage of eco-friendly products.

Pisciculture by Parbati SHG, Siriapali
Parbati SHG of Siriapali village consists of 10 women member who got enrolled in the cooperative in the month of April 2009. The SHG was in a dormant condition prior to the intervention of Subhalaxmi. Through motivational training and orientation programs the staffs of Subhalaxmi revived the SHG and started inculcating a habit of saving Rs. 50/- per month per member. While screening their resources, the livelihood support tem of Subhalaxmi explored the possibility of Fishery cultivation in the nearby pond situated in their hamlet. The SHG then brought the pond on lease from Panchayat for initial 03 years. With the support of Subhalaxmi the SHG members got an orientation from the scientist KVK, Jharsuguda and exposed to Bomaloi Fish breeding farm, Sambalpur. Since then they are into the business and earning a substantial volume of profit out of Fish farming. In the first year they have released 10,000 fingerlings and could able to earn a profit of Rs. 17000/-. In subsequent years they also earned their profit in the similar manner. This year the SHG members decided to release 25000 fingerlings in the pond. With the facilitation of Subhalaxmi, KVK agreed to provide all the fingerlings to the SHG members on free of cost. The members have only invested Rs.3500/- from their own to purchase fish feeds and medicines. For better result of production, Subhalaxmi team ensured regular follow up visit of scientist KVK to the village.
The group has completed netting for two times in this year and could able to harvest 3.5 qntls of fish (02 qntls big fish and 1.5 qntls small fish). They are selling these fish @ Rs. 100/- per Kg for big fish and Rs. 70/- per Kg for small fish. Two to three more netting is yet to be done and the expected volume of production is 8 to 9 qntls. Based the assumptions the group is expecting a profit of Rs. 50000/- to 60000/-.
The overall performance of this SHG with regard to Subhalaxmi is satisfactory. 7 members of the SHG have taken loan from the cooperative and some of them could absorb Rs. 50000/-. Not a single member of the SHG is defaulted in the accounts of Subhalaxmi and are depositing their savings on a regular basis.

Initiation and Marketing of Paddy straw mushroom cultivation
Paddy straw mushroom cultivation is a promising seasonal ventures promoted by the cooperative in its operational villages. The cooperative first identify interested members for mushroom farming then it scan the available resources of the household. Through the technical support of District horticulture department and Home science department of KVK the cooperative trained the interested members on best practices of mushroom farming. It also supply spawn to the farmers by procuring from outside districts. |

Floriculture (Marigold Cultivation)
Since its inception Subhalaxmi intervened in floriculture cultivation with a special focus on marigold. Farmers from Bhagipali, Katikela and Siriapali village were trained on best practices of marigold through the technical support from Horticulture department. Since then some of the interested farmers are doing marigold cultivation every year. In this year Subhalaxmi supported the farmers on providing quality seedlings brought from Kolkata. |

Vegetable Cultivation
Vegetable Farming is emerging as a profitable and demanding business venture in the region of Jharsuguda. Due to industrialisation the demand for fresh vegetable is growing. It now becomes difficult for the consumers of Jharsuguda to get fresh vegetables as per their desired quantity in a reasonable price. In the past Subhalaxmi intervened in this subsector and provided technical and loan support to the farmers. Training on Tomato Cultivation, Potato, Brinjal, Pointed Gourd and Onion were some of the initiatives taken up by Subhalaxmi with the technical support of district horticulture department. In these training programs farmers were trained and exposed to standard agriculture practices in the field of vegetable farming along with disease and pest management, micronutrient management and better harvesting practices. They were also trained on storage and marketing of their agriculture produce. As a result of these initiatives, 819 families of potential vegetable pockets such as Siriapali, Gudigaon, Keldaamal, Katikela and Parmanpur are now engaged in vegetable farming and earning their livelihoods.
